How To Tell You Need A Teeth Whitening Treatment

Julian Andrews

Teeth whitening is the easiest way to dramatically brighten up your teeth. Under the supervision of a dentist, teeth whitening can get your teeth up to three shades whiter. This is as opposed to over-the-counter kits that only get your teeth one shade whiter. The only uncertain factor in the process is determining if you should go for it or not. Here are some definite signs you should go for it.

Presence of plaque or tartar

When food particles get left on the teeth, they form a soft coat called plaque. When this soft coat hardens over time, its forms a solid yellow substance called tartar. Both plaque and tartar are definite signs that teeth whitening is a good option for you. This is because formation of plaque and tartar takes time to develop, indicating substantial effects on the teeth. In addition, plaque and tartar are hard to remove through brushing. Even after dental cleaning, a yellow tinge may still remain on the teeth surface. This yellowing can only be effectively removed through teeth whitening procedures.

General deterioration of teeth color

Apart from plaque and tartar, sometimes, the signs are more subtle. Your teeth could simply deteriorate in color from white to different shades of yellow. Mild discoloration can be hard to notice, and most people will only tell they need a whitening procedure when the discoloration is several shades darker. Remember that some of your teeth can be more discoloured than others. It's also important to note that teeth can discolor even with proper brushing and flossing. If you cannot tell whether your teeth are substantially discolored, seek the advice of your dentist. Dentists have color charts that they can use to precisely tell how badly discoloured your teeth are.

Presence of teeth stains

Discoloration is usually a result of poor dental hygiene, and the resultant effect is a yellowing shade on the teeth. However, if your teeth are exposed to other contaminants, staining may occur. Staining may take other color forms, with brown being the most common. Staining also takes place deeper into the teeth as opposed to discoloration that takes place on the teeth surface.  Teeth staining can be caused by frequent consumption of coffee, tobacco, fluoridated water or use of hard drugs. If you have teeth stains, you should definitely seek teeth whitening. However, note that teeth whitening may not always eradicate staining in whole. Sometimes it may just reduce the damage.

The results of teeth whitening are usually immediate, and the process takes about 30 minutes. With a brighter smile between your lips, you can enjoy easier dental hygiene and proud ownership of white teeth. For more information, contact a business such as Divine Dental.

About Me
Dentures and Dentist

Hello, my name is Jack. I am now 79 years old. As you can imagine, my teeth have taken something of a battering over the years. I lost a couple of teeth in a bar fight, four more decayed and one had to be extracted when it became infected. After losing so many teeth, my dentist suggested that I have dentures fitted. I was worried about this but my dentist was really great. He helped explain the procedure and then did an excellent job. I love my new dentures and I wanted to start this blog to offer help to others.
