Have You Broken A Tooth? Signs You Need To See An Emergency Dentist

Julian Andrews

If you've broken a tooth, you need to assess the situation right away. It might be time for you to visit an emergency dentist. Not all broken teeth need to receive emergency dental care. In fact, some broken teeth can be tended to by your family dentist during normal office hours. However, there are instances where a broken tooth requires immediate attention. If you're not sure how to care for your broken tooth, read the information provided below. If you're dealing with any of the situations described here, seek emergency dental care right away.

Your Face Is Swelling

If you've broken your tooth and your face is now swelling, it's time to visit an emergency dentist. This is especially important if you broke your tooth as the result of an accident. The impact that broke your tooth could have also caused serious damage to your jaw or gums. If that's the case, your dentist will need to provide you with emergency dental care.

Your Mouth Is Bleeding

If you broke your tooth above the gum line, you shouldn't see any bleeding. However, if your mouth is bleeding, it might be time to seek emergency dental care. This is especially true if you can't control the bleeding, or if the inside of your mouth is bleeding. Your broken tooth could have done damage to the inside of your mouth, which will require emergency care. If your gum is bleeding where your tooth broke, try biting down on clean medical gauze. If the bleeding doesn't stop after several minutes, visit an emergency dentist immediately.

You're Experiencing Pain

If you've broken your tooth and you're experiencing a bit of discomfort, over-the-counter pain medication should alleviate the discomfort. However, if the pain isn't dulled by over-the-counter medication, or the pain gets worse, contact an emergency dentist immediately. The intense pain may be a sign that the damage to your tooth has also affected the root. If that's the case, you need emergency dental care as quickly as possible.

You're Feeling Sharp Edges

If you've broken a tooth, and you're left with a sharp edge, it's time to visit an emergency dentist. A broken tooth won't always leave you with a sharp edge. However, when you do have a sharp edge, emergency dental care is called for. Sharp edges can cause serious injuries to the inside of your mouth, which is why you need to seek emergency dental care as quickly as you can.

About Me
Dentures and Dentist

Hello, my name is Jack. I am now 79 years old. As you can imagine, my teeth have taken something of a battering over the years. I lost a couple of teeth in a bar fight, four more decayed and one had to be extracted when it became infected. After losing so many teeth, my dentist suggested that I have dentures fitted. I was worried about this but my dentist was really great. He helped explain the procedure and then did an excellent job. I love my new dentures and I wanted to start this blog to offer help to others.
